How to Season Your Humidor: A 5-Step Guide

How to Season Your Humidor: A 5-Step Guide

Most aficionados will know that a brand new Humidor is a no place for a Cuban Cigars to rest! “Why?”, you ask.  Cedar is often part of the humidification device and if it’s used unseasoned it could rob the moisture from your cigars. When you season your humidor it allows the perfect balance of humidity, which gives your cigars the best conditions for preservation. It will also reduce the risk of warping and wood growth – two dreaded issues that can occur with humidors. We have a collection of humidors for sale on our Cuban Cigar Shop, such as the Cohiba Majestuoso 1966 – 50 Aniversario Humidor, this is limited edition – so check it out whilst you still can! We also stock the Davidoff Office Humidor – Macassar Palladium. Right let’s get to business. Before going ahead with the following method, you should always check the manufacturers instructions – just to ensure there are no actions they advise against. Now, provided they don’t go against the manufacturing instructions for your humidor, here is an easy 5-step method to seasoning your humidor.

STEP 1 – You begin this process by wiping your humidor with distilled water. Now, don’t make the mistake of thinking you can use tap water as a substitute. This will risk there being some left over mineral deposits – which could lead to pesky odours, a clogged up humidifier or even ruin the flavour of your precious cigars. Start by dampening your clean sponge/cloth and wipe down the inside of the humidor – the lid, trays and dividers included. Be extremely cautious that you don’t over saturate the wood with water and do not, under any circumstances, pour water into the humidor!

“A SIMPLE BUT CRUCIAL STEP”

STEP 2 – Next you will need to place the sponge inside the humidor – a simple but crucial step that requires care. Ensure that the sponge is not touching the wood, by placing it in a bowl or a plastic bag. You also need to ensure that the water isn’t dripping onto the interior wood. Keep taps on the sponge over time, just to guarantee that the humidor is humidifying properly.

STEP 3 – Then, you will need to place the humidifying device in the humidor. Before doing so, you need to fill up the device – again, ensure that it is not oversaturated. The manufacturing instructions will clarify whether your device takes distilled tap water or a different humidifying solution. You should let the excess solution drip into a sink and you can also absorb any excess liquid by laying the device on a paper towel. Wipe off any other excess that may be on the exterior of your device. When your sure it’s ready – place it inside the humidor.

STEP 4 – Now this requires patience, just close the humidor and wait for 24 hours while it seasons. Once this time is up – wipe it down again. This time remove the sponge and check if it’s damp. If the humidity hasn’t increased by 5% since the previous day, then wait another 24 hours. We recommend using a hygrometer to keep an eye on the humidity levels. Confirm that your hygrometer is correctly calibrated and that your readings are accurate to your humidor – this is a common and frustrating issues that aficionados face.

“GOOD THINGS COME TO THOSE WHO WAIT”

STEP 5 – If you had to give the humidor some more time, then grab your hygrometer once again and check if the humidor is now somewhere between 65-70% humidity. If it’s not – then you know what to do. Give it another day – good things come to those who wait. If it is then your cigars are ready to store.
